Rico is an incorporated small town in Dolores County, Colorado, United States. It was settled in 1879 as a silver mining center in the Pioneer Mining District; today it functions as a historic and tourism site. The population was 265 at the 2010 census, up from 205 at the 2000 census. Its current form of government is that of a home rule municipality. Rico is a name derived from Spanish meaning “rich”. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town of Rico has an area of 0.8 square miles (2.0 km2), all of it land.
Rico can be found along the headwaters of the Dolores River in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. Settled in 1879, Rico is rather rich in history. Rico once supported over 5,000 residents, 23 saloons, 2 churches and 88 active mines.The famous bonanza railroad, the Rio Grande Southern, used to roll through town transporting high amounts of silver traffic and was known as one of the most rugged and iconic narrow-gauge mountain railroads in the history of Colorado. The town sits high above sea level at an elevation of 8,827 feet.
Of course, the wonders of the great outdoors are available in every direction from Rico. From hiking in the Lizard Head Wilderness area to mountain biking along old mining roads and single-track trails over the pass to Telluride, there’s plenty to explore outside the hotel room. Four-wheel driving along forest roads, fishing in the Dolores River, and hunting and backcountry skiing in the endless natural areas surrounding Rico.
The Rico Hot Springs is a private hot spring located near Rico, Colorado. Increased unregulated use has led to negative impacts to the springs property. Effective immediately, visitation is now limited to Rico residents. Anyone encountered on the property may be asked to provide proof that they have been pre-authorized to visit. If none can be provided, trespass tickets will be issued. The owners are in the process of developing a long term plan which may involve expanded public use.
