Just step out the door and throw out a fly from your deck or fish from the shore on BLM land at one of the many easy to get to and close by stream banks. Sawpit is kid friendly, the school bus stop at the ​your ​doorstep. And there is a really great park just Down Valley with swing sets and slides a Trout pond for the kids and Kayakers to practice rolls as well as a ball field and public bathrooms. Surrounded by natural ​wonders of water, sky and red rock, ​Sawpit is a true gem. The weather is better at 7,592 feet. Not much snow and when it does come down it doesn’t stick around very long. There is up to 2 months more of frost free living than in Telluride. There are about 60 good souls living in the hamlet of Sawpit at this time and there will never be a heck of a lot more then that due to the topographical challenges that the San Miguel Canyon imposes as well as the fact that most all the land down Valley that has not been built on to date is public land. Sawpit is the fourth least populous incorporated town in the state of Colorado yet only 12 miles to the hustle and bustle of Telluride. the Sawpit Mercantile, which sells gas, liquor, natural foods, barbecue and general necessities and is a good place to meet friends and neighbors for an outstanding breakfast or lunch. Life is good in Sawpit.
